Major General Jeewaka Ruwan Kulatunga was born in Colombo on 6th July 1964. He studied at Nalanda College Colombo and excelled both in his academics and sports. His forte was hockey and he represented the Colombo schools hockey team in 1970-1980. As a school cadet, he had achieved the rank of Warrent Officer 2nd Class in the 3rd Battalion of Ceylon Cadet Corps in 1983. He was enlisted to the Army on 05 March 1984 as an Officer Cadet. On completion of military training at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant to the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry on 16 December 1985.
Major General Kulatunga first held the appointment as a Platoon Commander and was deployed on Counter Terrorist Operations in the North and East of Sri Lanka in December 1985. He had since then participated in most of the major military operations conducted in Sri Lanka while holding different responsibilities in various appointments commensurate to his ranks. He has a long service experience in the field of Counter Terrorist Operations and Counter Insurgency Operations. Major General Kulatunga had commanded an Infantry Battalion for over two years from 1996-1999 in Jaffna and Wanni during the densest period of operations against the terrorists. Later in December 2005 he was appointed an Infantry Brigade Commander which he held until September 2007 in Muhamalei, Jaffna. He was the Commander, 55 Infantry Division in 2012 in Jaffna. Finally, he had the privilege of commanding Security Forces (Wanni) Headquarters in 2016-2017, which is the largest field formation in the Sri Lanka Army.
Having graduated as a diploma holder in PSY OPS and CIV AFF from the prestigious Special Forces Training School, Ft BRAGG, in North Carolina, USA in 1995, he proceeded to follow the Command and General Staff Course at High Gate, Malaysia. There, he obtained the coveted ‘psc’ title with a Pg Dip in Strategic and Defence Studies awarded by University of Malaya. He also possess a Pg Dip in IR awarded by BCIS, Colombo in 2013.
Major General Kulatunga is an alumni of the prestigious National Defence College of the Philippines and had obtained the degree of Master in National Security Administration along with the title of ‘ndc’. Besides that he had attended number of military training courses, seminars and exercises in over fourteen different countries.

He has been appointed as the Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Light Infantry from 14 March 2018. Presently he is the Commandant of Defence Services Command and Staff Collage Sapugaskanda from 31 July 2017.
For his bravery demonstrated in the face of the enemy during Counter Terrorist Operations he was awarded with RANASURA GALLANTRY MEDAL for three consecutive times. He is further being awarded with ten other Military and service medals. He is married to Thushari Sania Kulatunga and blessed with two sons, Senal (22 years) and Asel (20 years) and also with a daughter Kulanga (14 years).
